In 2012, Facebook attempted to roll out automatic photo sync, a feature that basically allowed you to store photos on Facebook, and then decide if you wanted to make them public. It was a kind gesture in which the company helped us organize our digital keepsakes and gave us some storage space, but it also meant every picture you took was immediately uploaded to Facebook. All it would take is a few errant swipes and taps to upload and post a series of unflattering selfies. Fast-forward to 2014, when Facebook attempted to roll out a Snapchat clone. Slingshot wasn't a bad app, it just didn't have anything to offer over the service it was trying to emulate. Coupled with rumors about its failed acquisition of the ephemeral app, Slingshot was seen as a joke.

But now, it seems like Facebook has finally gotten private photo-sharing right with Moments. The company's new app, launched today, is a combination of the two earlier ideas—it's photo storage and auto-syncing meets private sharing, with some impressive facial recognition features to boot! In Product Manager Will Rubin describes the app as complementary to events where you and your friends are all taking and posting the same photos—or, perhaps more accurately, as an answer to the person who always asks 'Will you send that to me,' or 'Will you post that so I can have it?'

Rubin says that Moments arranges the photos on your phone into groups, all based on when they were taken—like at a wedding, or a weekend getaway. Facebook's facial recognition tech can identify which of your friends are in the photos, and you can privately send those photos to specific friends in the shot. WIRED If you're wary of any app promising to sync your photos, well, you should be. The auto-backup is a double-edged sword. The photo rolls on our phones are a very private, guarded places.

But Moments feels surprisingly secure: When you download and boot up the app, it very clearly labels two catalogs for you—one of them called 'Private' and the other 'Synced.' When you start, thankfully, everything is sitting in the 'Private' bucket. Here, you are asked whether you want to share the photos in that gallery with the person Facebook has analyzed and determined you were with. You can toggle specific photos from the generated gallery, as well, so if you want to sync some of them and keep the others from a friend's clutches, you can. The facial recognition is dead on, too: In my testing, there were no random mismatched faces and share suggestions in Moments. It's clear that Facebook is mining other, previously tagged photos of the person/people.

That shows how intensely Facebook has improved its facial recognition technology. Of course, if you have facial recognition turned off, your face will not be among those suggested to your friends while they're using Moments, and you likely won't get many synced photos sent your way.

I wondered if regular old Facebook tagging would prompt Moments in anyway—meaning, if a friend uploaded photos and said they were with you (i.e., 'Camping!—with Molly McHugh) without actually tagging your face, would this be taken into account by Moments? According to Facebook, no. 'Tagging someone in a photo on Facebook proper does not prompt a notification in Moments,' a Facebook rep told WIRED. Elaborating, though, Moments does have its own set of notifications. For example, if you were on a camping trip with your friend and she snapped several pictures, if she has the Moments app installed, she'll get a notification. The app is able to recognize that she's taken several photos of a particular moment.

The Facebook rep says: 'From there, if she opens the app, she'll be able to view suggestions of photos to sync to you and/or whichever of her other friends are in the pictures she took.' WIRED Sometimes Facebook asks if you want to sync photos with one person, sometimes with a group. If it can't determine a name or set of names for you, Moments asks if you want to fill that space in with one or more of your friends (which, of course, you don't have to do). These shares will go to your friend/s Moments app, and if they don't have it yet, it's conveniently shared in a private message with a prompt to download Moments. There's nothing particularly amazing about Moments UI, and there aren't any additional features beyond syncing albums and customizing them. But that's how it should be: Nothing about sharing private photos should be fuzzy. It should be clear and simple, and Moments is exactly that.

Will Moments catch on? Maybe—it definitely addresses a pain point.

Right now, sharing photos with friends is an all-or-nothing process. You can share one photo or an entire album via private message, but there's no fancy A.I.

Telling you when a certain person might appreciate those photos, or grouping them so you don't have to. What really works in Moments favor, though, is that it keeps the bar low—not too much of your faith is required.
